Simple Budgeting Tips that will Make a
Big Difference in your Wallet

Now more than ever, travel nurses are making financially-savvy decisions to earn more money…and save money too! Whether it’s choosing a higher-paying travel nurse job with Access Nurses, enjoying free housing instead of a stipend or picking up a per diem shift midweek, travel nurses are boosting their pay and savings while pursuing a career they love.

There are little things you can do while working as a travel nurse to enhance your banking account even more. Here are some simple and convenient budgeting tips for travel nurses:

Be a Smarter Shopper.
Travel nurses should shop with a purpose if you want to save money. No good can come from browsing when you’re trying to budget, so have a plan when you go shopping to avoid impulse purchasing. Make a “To Buy” list before going shopping; it’ll ease the desire to buy just because. Another good idea for travel nurses is to buy generic brands whenever possible to save money. There are times when the brand name makes a difference, but in general you’re paying for advertising and it’s not worth it. Buying in bulk on necessities that won’t expire (toilet paper, batteries, toothpaste, etc.) will also make a difference in your monthly spending.

Look for Alternatives.
No travel nurse likes to be inconvenienced…especially when it comes to expenses. Costs are rising on everything from gas to milk. But don’t let this keep you from living your travel nursing dreams. Just make some small adjustments. Look into the public transportation systems in your travel nurse location. Whether by bus, train or subway, public transit is a smart way to save money. Buy a monthly pass for extra savings. Also try cutting back on to-go coffees and water bottles. The convenience of getting Starbucks and drinking only bottled water is nice, but it costs a pretty penny. Making coffee at home and reusing water bottles are both easy and super cheap.

Cook at Home.
Your health doesn’t have to suffer due to budgeting. It’s not necessary to trade delicious meals for fast food just because you’re tired and stressed from working a 12-hour shift. Ordering take-out meals often will really add up; cooking at home is a much better and healthier idea. Travel nursing in California is a great place to take an assignment because of the plethora of markets with fresh produce available. Have fun experimenting with the local produce in the area and make it part of your travel nursing experience.

Get Your Rewards.
It’s time you took advantage of the many available money-saving rewards programs. Start a collection of frequent-buyer cards at your favorite local restaurants, coffee shops and dessert spots. Remember, every little bit helps. If you use credit cards, why not sign up for one with rewards that will complement your lifestyle? Airline credit cards are a particularly great idea for travel nurses since you’re moving every three months, plus vacations and weekend getaways. But there are also cards for everything from Nordstroms to Amazon.com that’ll send you discounts for future purchases. Just be sure to pay off your card every month to reap the full benefits.

Budgeting plans are different for everyone. By no means do you have to follow every tip thrown at you. Take baby steps at first to find the balance and decide what will work best for you. With all the extra money saved, you could treat yourself to a relaxing weekend getaway during your assignment. And your wallet will thank you too.

Advice for a New Travel Nurse

I’m looking into beginning my travel nursing career! I am a new nurse. I am talking to two different companies and trying to decide which route I want to take. If you could give me one piece of travel nursing advice what would it be? What do you wish you knew when you first stated travel nursing? Any advice you can offer would be appreciated! Thanks!
