Access Nurses Weekly Travel Nurses Give Back to the Community

Volume 13 Number 3 - December 28th

No matter where you are on assignment, there are still so many ways you can give back and make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate in the new year. Traditional ideas like serving food at a soup kitchen or donating gifts to a children’s toy drive are always available, no matter your travel nurse location or time of year. Here are some other ways to utilize your nursing traits of compassion and care and commit to volunteer this year.

1. Visit with someone. It’s sad, but true that some people living in nursing homes, group homes and special care facilities don’t have many visitors. You can be the difference in their lives by just spending time and talking with them.

Make treats for other volunteers. Give something nice to the people who dedicate their time to volunteering in the community by bringing snacks, baked goods and drinks to their organization.

3. Be the answer to a wish list. Ask your favorite nonprofit agency for a wish list. This quick and easy volunteer activity will further help the agency support its cause.

5. Care for the military and their families. Show your appreciation for the service men and women by sending them cards and packages. You can also adopt a family who has a loved one overseas.

6. Have a clothing drive. Clean out your closet and give away those clothes and shoes you never wear anymore to a shelter or thrift store. Ask your coworkers to help too by setting up boxes around work for them to leave their unwanted clothes too.

7. Make a small difference every day. Offer to buy coffee for the person behind you in the drive-thru line, take a blanket to a homeless person you’ve seen out in the cold, baby-sit for a friend for free while he/she has a night of fun. It may be a small sacrifice for you, but it will make a big difference to someone else.
8. Decide to volunteer year round. Make it your New Year’s resolution to give more of your time to non-profit organizations and the community. You’ll be able to see the difference you’re making all year long.

Which Travel Company?

I’m trying to choose a travel company to work for because I’m giving up a decent government job with good benefits. Any ideas which ones are good and the ones I need to stay away from?
