Access Nurses Weekly - Get Your Dream Assignment with the Right Attitude!
Volume 14 Number 1 - February 15th
The key to having a great travel nursing experience is easy; it’s all about attitude.
While preparing for your assignment and during your travels, it is not always going to be possible to control every situation. Bad interviews can happen. You may not always like every single coworker at your nursing job. But the right attitude is your key to success no matter what happens. By applying an upbeat and dedicated attitude, you’re sure to have an unforgettable travel nurse assignment.
Flexibility. A flexible state of mind will allow you to adapt to your new surroundings and lifestyle as a travel nurse. With every assignment comes new coworkers, new environments, new procedures, etc. If youre flexible, youll be better prepared to handle the unexpected and the unfamiliar that come with working on a traveling nurse assignment.
Assertiveness. Travel nursing is all about choice; you get to choose where and when you want to work. So enjoy it. Be sure to tell your recruiter what youre looking for in a travel nursing assignment and dont settle for less than you deserve. Ask for what you need, as well as what you want. And speak up if you feel unsure about any particular location, hospital or housing.
Organization. Excellent organization skills are vital when youre moving every three months as a travel nurse. Its a good idea to keep your paperwork and documents in folders and organize them by assignment so they are easily accessible. Plus, log the dates you start and end an assignment on a calendar so you can give yourself ample time to research your next assignment before your current one finishes.
Desire for challenge. If youre a travel nurse, you already enjoy challenges. After all, moving to a new city and working with new staffs is all about challenge. But you have to thrive on challenges or the travel nursing lifestyle will overwhelm you. Be prepared to face challenges such as floating to different units, interacting with different cultures, etc.
Strong interpersonal skills. As a travel nurse, you will constantly be changing your work environment and meeting new staffs and patients. Make the transition easier by having a friendly and open-minded attitude at work. The permanent staff will be more susceptible to you as a newcomer to the hospital. Also, good communication skills and a sense of humor will go a long way.
Optimism Nothing ruins an assignment like a bad attitude. Remember that there is always an upside to every situation. Try and focus on the good when youre at work, home or play. By maintaining a positive outlook, even when times are rough, youll be less likely to stress out or get frustrated.

I’ve seen a which hospitals to avoid thread, but what about the good hospitals? Any recommendations? I’m interested in the San Fran, L.A. and San Jose area in particular.
