Access Nurses Weekly- A Fantastic Assignment: Travel Nursing at an Indian Navajo Reservation
Volume 10 Number 3 - June 14th

(Chinle, AZ: White House Ruins at the Canyon de Chelly National Monument.)
(Travel RN Naomi Heye with Ty Pennington on the set of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.)
Set against a backdrop of magnificent red rock and brilliant blue skies in the serene desert landscape of Chinle, Arizona, Canadian RN Naomi Heyes has had an experience of a lifetime!
Naomi is a 27-year-old nurse on her first travel assignment with Access Nurses, a healthcare services company that specializes in providing travel nurses to more than 1,600 hospitals throughout the United States. Her love of traveling has brought her to this Indian reservation in the heart of the Navajo Nation, home to such historic beauty like the Canyon de Chelly National Monument.
While attending college in British Columbia, Naomi knew she wanted to do travel nursing because of her love of traveling. She’s been to Guatemala, Europe, Cuba and all over the United States. She even worked in North Carolina after she graduated college.
Pediatrics has always appealed to Naomi, who works in the Obstetrics Care Unit. “I pretty much always knew [I’d work with kids]. Kids are what I love.” With her great love for children and passion for visiting new places, Naomi found the perfect match in travel nursing.
Working only three night shifts a week, Naomi has plenty of downtime to explore Arizona and even other surrounding places like Las Vegas and Utah. “I’ve done a ton of stuff. I love being able to go off randomly and sporadically…because I’m making more money [as a travel nurse].” She’s attended events like Tim McGraw/Faith Hill and Celine Dion concerts and was also lucky enough to volunteer on the show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. When she heard that the crew needed volunteers at the filming site in Pinon, a town about an hour away, she knew she had to go. She helped out the catering crew and then worked with Ty Pennington on his “secret project.”
“[Extreme Makeover: Home Edition] is my favorite T.V. show and being Canadian I thought I would never actually be near the show. This pretty much made my assignment fantastic!”
During her 13-week stay, Naomi has not only enjoyed the opportunity to travel, but she has had a welcoming and happy work experience with the staff at the Chinle healthcare facility. “The staff has been phenomenal; they’ve been so nice to me.”
Moving away from home was hard for Naomi, but with all of the fun adventures and activities, her assignment has gone by faster than expected. Her travel assignment is complete in just over a week. She plans to go home to Canada over the summer to be with a friend who’s giving birth to twins, and then will do some more travel nursing.
Naomi can’t wait to start traveling again with Access Nurses. This time, she’s thinking of a big city like New York City or Anchorage, Alaska.

Just qualified and I am three months into my first job. I love it mostly but about once a month everything goes perashaped. How are others finding it out there? And does anybody else find it extremely difficult not to worry about work when you come home? If you dont worry, how on earth did you learn not to do so?

A Simple Diagnosis
A man goes to the doctor and says to the doctor:
“It hurts when I press here” (pressing his side)
“And when I press here” (pressing the other side)
“And here” (his leg)
“And here, here and here” (his other leg, and both arms)
The doctor examined him all over and finally discovered what was wrong:
“You’ve got a broken finger!”
