The Right Vote for Healthcare?

Is it just me or are any of you confused about how to vote when it comes to the presidential candidates’ take on healthcare? I know we are having a financial crisis, but I want to make sure the future of healthcare isn’t being ignored. Can anybody offer any advice about the different candidates proposed policies?

The Best Destinations to Fit your Traveling Personality

Whether you crave artistic and musical influence, outdoor adventure or a little peace and quiet, there are fantastic travel nurse assignments to fit your lifestyle. Here is a list of the best destinations – no matter your traveling personality and preferences.

ARTS and ENTERTAINMENT
The arts take center stage in San Francisco, California and Portland, Oregon. Whether you are an amateur artist or simply enjoy admiring the work of others, you won’t be disappointed in these cities. San Francisco has long been a center for arts and culture of all kinds and is proud of its museums, theatres and craft fairs found all over the city. Portland is an up-and-coming city in the art world, with innovative and artistic roots grounded everywhere from live performance halls to galleries.

ESCAPE and UNWIND
San Diego, California and Sedona, Arizona are just what the doctor ordered for the travel nurse in search of relaxation and rejuvenation. In addition to San Diego’s laid-back personality, the city offers many relaxing getaways, including weekend trips to Julian, wine country tours and resort-style living on the beach. Enjoy life at a slower pace in the quaint desert city of Sedona. There are few places that match the beauty of Red Rock Canyon, especially at sunset, when the famous rocks’ crimson-hue glows even brighter.

MUSIC and LYRICS
Austin, Texas and Nashville, Tennessee will literally be music to your ears during your travel nursing assignment. For music lovers, these cities are pulsing with rhythm and melodies. With more than 200 musical venues playing everything from country to jazz to Rock and Roll, Austin truly deserves its nickname as the “Live Music Capital of the World.” And don’t forget to honor the great musical legends of the past. You can tune into musical history in Nashville, home of great sights like the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame.

SINGLE and SPIRITED
One is far from the loneliest number when you’re a travel nurse in Los Angeles, California or Miami, Florida. Both cities are entertainment hubs, which never leave a moment of boredom for the traveling singles. L.A. and Miami are defined by their diverse cultures and energetic vibes. Without the worry of paying for rent as a travel nurse in either city, you’re free to indulge in the sights, like snowboarding trips to the mountains in L.A. and lavish nights out on the town in Miami.

THRILLS and DISCOVERY
If adventure is your middle name, you belong in the great outdoors of Great Lakes, Colorado or Santa Fe, New Mexico. These rugged, yet stunning cities are perfect for the travel nurse who craves excitement off the clock too. Grand Lake is home to Rocky Mountain National Forest, a nature-lover’s paradise. Enjoy activities like rafting trips, hiking trails and biking tours. For country-western fun, Santa Fe delivers the best—from horseback riding trips to thrilling rodeo shows. Explore the beautiful terrain by foot or bike or helicopter.

Travel Nursing with a Passion

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Top Travel Destinations for Every Interest

Travel nursing is all about following your passions. But don’t just limit that to inside the hospital. Whether you crave world-class cuisine, rich culture or a thriving night life…go to the extreme as a travel nurse in cities that cater to your interests and hobbies.

Traveling Taste Buds

If you’re a food connoisseur and you haven’t been to New York City or Dallas, you and your stomach are missing out. Embrace the tastes and flavors of NYC and Dallas during your next travel nurse assignment. New York offers the best of food by offering a variety of restaurants to tantalize every palate. From Thai to German to Italian to Portuguese, New York is a bold and decadent city for food lovers. What Dallas lacks in variety, it makes up for in quality. The city is famous for good ole Southern cooking and finger-licking barbeque…so good they’ll make your mouth water.

Family Traveler

Kids are the happiest traveling campers when taking assignments to cities like Orlando or Orange County. You’ll never be short on entertainment in Orlando, a kid’s ultimate playground with attractions like Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and Discovery Cove. While catered to kids, it’s a city that’s fun for the whole family. And speaking of family, look no further than Orange County as a great spot to bring the family. In addition to family-friendly entertainment, the city is full of safe neighborhoods and top-ranked education systems.

Traveling through History

The United States may be a young country, but the history is plentiful. Immerse yourself in the past as a travel nurse in Philadelphia and Washington D.C. As the signing place of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, Philadelphia is filled with historical significance—from Independence Hall to the Benjamin Franklin National Monument. And in D.C., it’s hard not to feel patriotic when you’re walking the streets lined with dozens of monuments, buildings and museums filled with the history of our forefathers.

Nightlife Traveler

You like the nightlife? Las Vegas and Atlanta should be at the top of you list for travel nursing destinations. Las Vegas comes alive at night, bursting with vibrant lights and entertainment to suit any desire—from award-winning operas, musicals and concerts to world-famous casinos and night clubs. Though continually ranked one of top cities for nightlife, Atlanta is a hidden gem for nocturnal lovers. The lure of late-night bars, Southern-style restaurants and Latin-influenced dance clubs will keep the party going all night.

Paws-itive Traveler

For pet lovers, travel nursing without your favorite companion is just not an option. Luckily, cities like Seattle and Chicago make it easy for you to bring your four-legged friends on assignment. Seattle’s public transit system allows well-behaved pets to travel with you (as long as they are on leashes) and there are 11 dog parks within city limits. Chicago has an array of outdoor cafes and bars where Fido can join you for a meal. Plus, there are more than 18 miles of trails around Lake Michigan perfect for a walk with your pet.

Finding Love while Travel Nursing

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Access Nurses RN Follows her Passion,

and Falls in Love Along the Way

Love can come when you least expect it. Andrea R. would probably agree with that statement. She never imagined she’d meet her future husband while travel nursing. But that’s exactly what happened.

Growing up with an aunt who was a traveling nurse really inspired Andrea to pursue the profession. With the family influence, plus an insatiable love of travel made the travel nursing career an easy choice. She headed off to Virginia on her first assignment with Access Nurses in May 2007 as an ER nurse.

“I came to Richmond knowing nobody, and since I was here, I picked up a lot of extra time in the ER,” she said. And that’s where she met Billy, a hospitalist doctor.

“[Billy] was one of the first people I met. He brought me a cupcake, and I was easily won over.”

Nine months later, Andrea was flipping through some pictures Billy had just developed while sitting on their back porch. Each photo was of something different—from a wagon to their dog—with a different letter or word, spelling out “Will you marry me?”

At first Andrea thought he was teasing her.

“For the past couple months he would give me the plastic ring [on top of cupcakes] and propose,” she said. But then he pulled a real ring out of his pocket.

Next came the wedding planning. The couple had plans to go to Belize for a vacation in August. But they figured: “Why wait?”

The vacation turned into a destination wedding. The two wed on a beautiful, secluded beach on August 8—just the two of them. Andrea walked down the aisle lined with conch shells and flower petals holding a bouquet of red and pink ginger flowers as Billy stood under a red-flowered archway. A local judge married them.

Andrea and Billy live in Richmond with their two Labrador-Retrievers, Chance and Shadow. Andrea works full time for now at Henrico Doctor’s Hospital. But the travel bug is biting and she can’t wait to get back on the road.

“I am itching to go on another assignment,” she said. “I love the freedom, the flexibility.”

Until then, Billy is trying to make it up to her.

“He made the agreement that since I stopped travel nursing, he’d make it up to me by going somewhere every month,” she said. Florida and Maine are the next stops on their destination list.
