What Every Travel Nurse Should Bring on Assignment

Preparing for a 13-week travel nursing assignment can seem overwhelming, even if you’re a veteran travel nurse. There is so much to pack and bring—clothes, toiletries and not to mention the rest of your belongings. You want to plan well and be fully prepared for every occasion. Access Nurses helps with furniture (phew, one less thing to bring), but what about everything else you’ll need for the next three months? We’ve compiled a list of don’t-leave-home-without-it items for every traveling nurse:

  • Capture Every Moment: Your camera should be at the top of your list next to clothes and your toothbrush. After all, memories are priceless, and you don’t want to forget a single one. Also, bring an extra memory card, plus the necessary cords to upload your pictures to a blog or email for your friends and family to stay updated on your travels.
  • Be Your Own Handy Man: Skip the power drill, saw and wrenches, all you need is a travel size tool box containing the most basic tools—hammer, screwdriver, nails, etc.—for quick fix-it and decorating projects around your travel nurse apartment.
  • Gain More Space: You can eliminate any outlet dilemmas (too few, not in the needed spot) by packing power strips and extension cords for your travel nursing assignment. These lightweight and portable items and will allow you to always have enough space for all of your needed items—from a cell phone charger to a toaster to a curling iron.
  • Never Feel Stranded: Sure, you have all the necessary numbers in your cell phone, but what happens if it breaks or gets lost? Keeping an address book can save you from the panic of losing your main connection to friends, family and recruiter. It’s a helpful backup system, plus you can also keep addresses and important dates in it as well.
  • Find Your Way Around: Not only will you know where to go during your travel nurse assignment, but you’ll know how to get there by investing in city guidebooks and a GPS navigation system. Guidebooks offer great tips for newcomers, from tasty restaurants, family-friendly sights and the best nightclubs. GPS systems are an investment, but a practical one for travel nurses moving to a new city so often.
  • Create a Home Away From Home: Make your new apartment feel like home by bringing some personal and fun items to decorate. Framed pictures, refrigerator magnets, inexpensive artwork and rugs are all very portable and easy to take with you to each travel nurse job.
  • Say Goodbye to Boredom: Whether it’s your favorite books, movies or CDs, be sure to bring them with you during your travel nurse assignment for those times when you just want to stay at home and relax, but still be entertained. A radio is also a great item to pack. You can keep up on the news, listen to music and use it as an alarm clock.
  • Keep Cool For Less: Bring a small, easy-to-carry fan with you on your travel nursing assignment. Not only will you feel the breeze immediately with a fan, but you’ll save on electricity by using a fan to cool you off instead of central air conditioning.

Interview Process

I will be graduating from a nursing program in December ‘08. I’m very excited. I am actually interviewing for University of Maryland’s R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. Next week, I will interview with the nurse managers.

I am looking for some advice for the interview, maybe thoughts from those who know about the shock trauma units. Any advice on this process or the first year would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

High Paying Nurse Jobs in Slow Economy

Monday, August 4th, 2008

The steady rise of travel nurse jobs in California gives nurses the opportunity to make financial gains despite a slowing economy.

Travel nurses are turning economic hardships into money making opportunities by heading to California - one of the highest paying areas in the country.

California is well-known as the playground for celebrities and surfers, but there is so much more to this diverse “Golden State.” California travel nursing offers variety—enjoy the beach chic cities of Orange County, the cultural diversity of San Francisco and the glamour and glitz of Hollywood. With the increasing number of California nurse jobs at Access Nurses, travel nursing in California brings golden opportunities.

Ask a recruiter about assignments in one of these amazing California locations:

San Francisco. Enjoy Metropolitan Style. A fusion of modern living and historic elegance, San Francisco is the perfect destination for nurses who want to experience life in a big city. The Bay Area boasts an iconic waterfront, outstanding public transportation and quaint neighborhoods. San Francisco features plenty of cultural events and attractions, such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Aquarium of the Bay, Union Square, Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown, Lombard Street and Coit Tower.

Fresno & Sacramento. Live the Good Life. Uncover all the treasures that both the Fresno and Sacramento areas have to offer. Some of the highest paid assignments in the entire state of California are found in Fresno and Sacramento. You’ll also grow rich in experience and adventure by discovering the area’s attractions. In Sacramento, take the time to see the Science and Space Discovery Center, California State Railroad Museum, Sutter’s Fort State Historic Site and various professional sporting events. Fresno is the gateway to the Kingsburg Swedish Village, the Children’s Museum of the Sierra, the Fresno County Fruit, Blossom and Citrus Trail and various cultural arts at the William Saroyan Theater.

Orange County. An Inviting Lifestyle. Gorgeous year-round weather and endless beaches are just the beginning of what makes Orange County irresistible. It’s fast becoming the place where travel nurses work for 13 weeks and then just can’t seem to leave. Excellent schools and family-friendly neighborhoods make Orange County an ideal area to live. Orange County also offers outstanding shopping, golf courses, dining venues and, of course, Disneyland.

Los Angeles. A Taste of Everything. With a little bit of everything to choose from, there is never a dull moment in the city of Los Angeles. The metropolitan area blends with acres of suburban neighborhoods to create one of the most energetic cities around. Home to the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Hollywood Bowl and the Orpheum Theatre, Los Angeles is known as the entertainment center of the world. Travel nurses can also enjoy a beach day in Malibu or dinner out at a trendy L.A. restaurant.

San Diego. Explore the Outdoors. For the travel nurse craving a location near the outdoors, San Diego is the place to be. Besides fantastic beach weather all year round, there are miles of hiking and biking trails along the coast and in the mountains. Take up surfing, kayaking, paragliding or camping in the San Diego area and enjoy the diverse landscape and breathtaking scenery. Also be sure to hit the most popular attractions in San Diego, including Old Town, Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo, Cabrillo National Monument and SeaWorld.

They say there is a demand for nurses, but why are those empty slots at the hospitals not being filled by all of the students from every booked nursing school? Is it that students are not passing or completing nursing school? Why is their still such a wide shortage?

Travel Nursing Interview Tips: Get the Travel Nursing Job You Want!

Access Nurses a leading travel nurse staffing company is dedicated to making sure you get the nurse job you want. You’ve selected a great location, your paperwork is completed, but the most important step is nailing the interview with the prospective hospital. We’ve compiled a list of top travel nursing interview tips to ensure you have a successful interview and land the travel nursing job you want.

#10 Travel Nurse Interview Tip: Follow Up
After the interview, it’s a good idea to follow up with your travel nurse recruiter. Let him/her know how the interview went and whether you’re still interested. Your recruiter will notify you promptly after hearing back from the hospital about the travel nurse assignment.

#9 Travel Nurse Interview Tip: Remember to Smile
A smile will change the tone in your voice significantly during the travel nurse interview. So be sure to plaster a toothy grin on your face when answering questions. Your cheek muscles may be sore afterwards, but it’ll be worth it when you land the job.

#8 Travel Nurse Interview Tip: Don’t Make Excuses
If the travel nurse job is important to you, don’t make excuses about why you can’t have an interview at the designated time. Putting off the interview may have a negative impact and you may miss out on the job to a travel nurse who’s more available.

#7 Travel Nurse Interview Tip: Be Truthful on your Nursing Resume
It may sound like a no-brainer, but you don’t want to get caught in a lie during your travel nurse interview because you “fibbed” on your resume to make it look better. If the interviewer inquires about it, you’re going to be embarrassed. And that’s a definite way to not get a call back.

#6 Travel Nurse Interview Tip: Be Flexible

A big turnoff for an interviewer is a demanding travel nurse. It’s understood that you’ll have expectations about the details of the position, but hospitals want travel nurses who are positive, flexible and team players. Be firm on what matters most to you without being difficult.

#5 Travel Nursing Interview Tip: Be Prepared
One of the worst mistakes you can make is not being prepared for your travel nurse interview. Make sure you know the name of the facility and do some research on it. Learn as much as you can beforehand so you can ask questions during the interview. Plus, check and see if it has been in the news lately for a new technology, specialty case, etc.

#4 Travel Nursing Interview Tip: Don’t Get Distracted
If you really want this job, then show it. When the time comes for your travel nurse interview, put aside all distractions and focus on impressing the interviewer. Don’t try and put away groceries; turn off the television; and have someone else watch the kids for an hour. First impressions are lasting, so make sure you give a great one.

#3 Travel Nursing Interview Tip: Ask about Vacation Time
During your travel nurse assignment, it’s inevitable that you’ll want to take time off to visit family, explore your new city or take a trip with friends. It’s very important to ask about the hospital’s vacation policy and request any foreseeable time off so you don’t miss out on any fun travels. A smart tip: wait until the end of the interview so you don’t come off as pushy or demanding.

#2 Travel Nurse Interview Tip: Practice Professionalism

Professionalism is key when you’re having your travel nurse interview. Be polite and conversational, enthusiastic and interested. Avoid slang/empty words such as “like,” “um,” “you know” and “cool” during the interview. Also, make sure your phone outgoing voicemail message is interview-ready, with a simple and cheerful message.

#1 Travel Nurse Interview Tip: Ask Questions
As a travel nurse, you’re not just the interviewee, you’re also the interviewer. Be sure to ask at least three questions during your travel nurse interview (floating policy, types of patients, etc.). Remember that you are trying to figure out if this hospital is the right choice for your travel nurse assignment.

Big Difference in your Wallet

Now more than ever, travel nurses are making financially-savvy decisions to earn more money…and save money too! Whether it’s choosing a higher-paying travel nurse job with Access Nurses, enjoying free housing instead of a stipend or picking up a per diem shift midweek, travel nurses are boosting their pay and savings while pursuing a career they love.

There are little things you can do while working as a travel nurse to enhance your banking account even more. Here are some simple and convenient budgeting tips for travel nurses:

Be a Smarter Shopper.
Travel nurses should shop with a purpose if you want to save money. No good can come from browsing when you’re trying to budget, so have a plan when you go shopping to avoid impulse purchasing. Make a “To Buy” list before going shopping; it’ll ease the desire to buy just because. Another good idea for travel nurses is to buy generic brands whenever possible to save money. There are times when the brand name makes a difference, but in general you’re paying for advertising and it’s not worth it. Buying in bulk on necessities that won’t expire (toilet paper, batteries, toothpaste, etc.) will also make a difference in your monthly spending.

Look for Alternatives.
No travel nurse likes to be inconvenienced…especially when it comes to expenses. Costs are rising on everything from gas to milk. But don’t let this keep you from living your travel nursing dreams. Just make some small adjustments. Look into the public transportation systems in your travel nurse location. Whether by bus, train or subway, public transit is a smart way to save money. Buy a monthly pass for extra savings. Also try cutting back on to-go coffees and water bottles. The convenience of getting Starbucks and drinking only bottled water is nice, but it costs a pretty penny. Making coffee at home and reusing water bottles are both easy and super cheap.

Cook at Home.
Your health doesn’t have to suffer due to budgeting. It’s not necessary to trade delicious meals for fast food just because you’re tired and stressed from working a 12-hour shift. Ordering take-out meals often will really add up; cooking at home is a much better and healthier idea. Travel nursing in California is a great place to take an assignment because of the plethora of markets with fresh produce available. Have fun experimenting with the local produce in the area and make it part of your travel nursing experience.

Get Your Rewards.
It’s time you took advantage of the many available money-saving rewards programs. Start a collection of frequent-buyer cards at your favorite local restaurants, coffee shops and dessert spots. Remember, every little bit helps. If you use credit cards, why not sign up for one with rewards that will complement your lifestyle? Airline credit cards are a particularly great idea for travel nurses since you’re moving every three months, plus vacations and weekend getaways. But there are also cards for everything from Nordstroms to Amazon.com that’ll send you discounts for future purchases. Just be sure to pay off your card every month to reap the full benefits.

Budgeting plans are different for everyone. By no means do you have to follow every tip thrown at you. Take baby steps at first to find the balance and decide what will work best for you. With all the extra money saved, you could treat yourself to a relaxing weekend getaway during your assignment. And your wallet will thank you too.

Picking a Specialty

I am about to begin my pre-reqs for the nursing program I want to get into, and I am thinking about my specialty. I always wanted to do neonatal nursing, but feared it would be very depressing and would be high stress because you are responsible for all the babies in the nursery. Any suggestions?

Access Nurses Weekly Create a Home Away From Home

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Volume 16 Number 2 - June 27th

As a travel nurse, you’re familiar with moving. A lot. With the help of Access Nurses, every 13 weeks you pack up your life and head off to a new travel nursing adventure, where you’ll try to create a comfortable living space all over again. Though it would be easy to forgo decorating and just accept your surroundings, why not embrace your temporary residence and make it something special—a place you want to come back to after a long shift at the hospital?Adding pizzazz to your décor doesn’t have to be a strenuous or expensive activity. Here are some simple and inexpensive tricks for going from blah to beautiful and turning your travel nursing housing into a home.Use Nature as Decoration.
Owning house plants as a travel nurse isn’t very practical. Even silk plants can be annoying to take with you when you move every few months. But that doesn’t mean you need to forgo color and life in your apartment. Having a fresh vase full of flowers will add a burst of color and cheer when you walk into the room. You can make a fun and edible decoration by using big bowls of fruit as centerpieces. Or, bottle up beach sand and sea shells from your coastal travel nurse assignment and display it as artwork.

Little Changes, Big Difference.
Since free housing and furniture are part of the travel nurse package, you don’t need to break the bank to make your apartment pop; it’s all about accessorizing. Little changes like adding a floor rug or adding some throw pillows can make a big difference and show off your personality and creativity too. Look for reasonably-priced rugs, lamps and other home decor at local craft fairs, flea markets and thrift stores.

Do-it-Yourself Artwork.
As a travel nurse, you may not be looking to invest in expensive art, but you don’t have to settle for bare, white walls either. You can create unique and personal artwork to adorn your apartment. Fill a shadow box with mementos from previous travel assignments to hang on the wall. Frame unusual items from your travels like maps from your road trip through Arizona or a subway ticket from a weekend trip to New York. Design a collage of your favorite travel nursing snapshots.

Clear Out the Clutter.
This may sound like a cleaning tip, but it’s actually an easy and cheap decorating tip. Clearing the counters and surfaces—from the piles of mail in the entry way to the clothes and knick-knacks scattered in every room—will give your apartment a clean and modern upgrade. Besides, clutter and a mobile lifestyle just don’t mix. Designate areas for all of your belongings, like having a basket for mail and magazines or only displaying your favorite pictures and collectibles and storing the rest in a closet.

Caring for the Wounded
