Travel Nursing Interview Tips: Get the Travel Nursing Job You Want!

Access Nurses a leading travel nurse staffing company is dedicated to making sure you get the nurse job you want. You’ve selected a great location, your paperwork is completed, but the most important step is nailing the interview with the prospective hospital. We’ve compiled a list of top travel nursing interview tips to ensure you have a successful interview and land the travel nursing job you want.

#10 Travel Nurse Interview Tip: Follow Up
After the interview, it’s a good idea to follow up with your travel nurse recruiter. Let him/her know how the interview went and whether you’re still interested. Your recruiter will notify you promptly after hearing back from the hospital about the travel nurse assignment.

#9 Travel Nurse Interview Tip: Remember to Smile
A smile will change the tone in your voice significantly during the travel nurse interview. So be sure to plaster a toothy grin on your face when answering questions. Your cheek muscles may be sore afterwards, but it’ll be worth it when you land the job.

#8 Travel Nurse Interview Tip: Don’t Make Excuses
If the travel nurse job is important to you, don’t make excuses about why you can’t have an interview at the designated time. Putting off the interview may have a negative impact and you may miss out on the job to a travel nurse who’s more available.

#7 Travel Nurse Interview Tip: Be Truthful on your Nursing Resume
It may sound like a no-brainer, but you don’t want to get caught in a lie during your travel nurse interview because you “fibbed” on your resume to make it look better. If the interviewer inquires about it, you’re going to be embarrassed. And that’s a definite way to not get a call back.

#6 Travel Nurse Interview Tip: Be Flexible

A big turnoff for an interviewer is a demanding travel nurse. It’s understood that you’ll have expectations about the details of the position, but hospitals want travel nurses who are positive, flexible and team players. Be firm on what matters most to you without being difficult.

#5 Travel Nursing Interview Tip: Be Prepared
One of the worst mistakes you can make is not being prepared for your travel nurse interview. Make sure you know the name of the facility and do some research on it. Learn as much as you can beforehand so you can ask questions during the interview. Plus, check and see if it has been in the news lately for a new technology, specialty case, etc.

#4 Travel Nursing Interview Tip: Don’t Get Distracted
If you really want this job, then show it. When the time comes for your travel nurse interview, put aside all distractions and focus on impressing the interviewer. Don’t try and put away groceries; turn off the television; and have someone else watch the kids for an hour. First impressions are lasting, so make sure you give a great one.

#3 Travel Nursing Interview Tip: Ask about Vacation Time
During your travel nurse assignment, it’s inevitable that you’ll want to take time off to visit family, explore your new city or take a trip with friends. It’s very important to ask about the hospital’s vacation policy and request any foreseeable time off so you don’t miss out on any fun travels. A smart tip: wait until the end of the interview so you don’t come off as pushy or demanding.

#2 Travel Nurse Interview Tip: Practice Professionalism

Professionalism is key when you’re having your travel nurse interview. Be polite and conversational, enthusiastic and interested. Avoid slang/empty words such as “like,” “um,” “you know” and “cool” during the interview. Also, make sure your phone outgoing voicemail message is interview-ready, with a simple and cheerful message.

#1 Travel Nurse Interview Tip: Ask Questions
As a travel nurse, you’re not just the interviewee, you’re also the interviewer. Be sure to ask at least three questions during your travel nurse interview (floating policy, types of patients, etc.). Remember that you are trying to figure out if this hospital is the right choice for your travel nurse assignment.

Simple Budgeting Tips that will Make a
Big Difference in your Wallet

Now more than ever, travel nurses are making financially-savvy decisions to earn more money…and save money too! Whether it’s choosing a higher-paying travel nurse job with Access Nurses, enjoying free housing instead of a stipend or picking up a per diem shift midweek, travel nurses are boosting their pay and savings while pursuing a career they love.

There are little things you can do while working as a travel nurse to enhance your banking account even more. Here are some simple and convenient budgeting tips for travel nurses:

Be a Smarter Shopper.
Travel nurses should shop with a purpose if you want to save money. No good can come from browsing when you’re trying to budget, so have a plan when you go shopping to avoid impulse purchasing. Make a “To Buy” list before going shopping; it’ll ease the desire to buy just because. Another good idea for travel nurses is to buy generic brands whenever possible to save money. There are times when the brand name makes a difference, but in general you’re paying for advertising and it’s not worth it. Buying in bulk on necessities that won’t expire (toilet paper, batteries, toothpaste, etc.) will also make a difference in your monthly spending.

Look for Alternatives.
No travel nurse likes to be inconvenienced…especially when it comes to expenses. Costs are rising on everything from gas to milk. But don’t let this keep you from living your travel nursing dreams. Just make some small adjustments. Look into the public transportation systems in your travel nurse location. Whether by bus, train or subway, public transit is a smart way to save money. Buy a monthly pass for extra savings. Also try cutting back on to-go coffees and water bottles. The convenience of getting Starbucks and drinking only bottled water is nice, but it costs a pretty penny. Making coffee at home and reusing water bottles are both easy and super cheap.

Cook at Home.
Your health doesn’t have to suffer due to budgeting. It’s not necessary to trade delicious meals for fast food just because you’re tired and stressed from working a 12-hour shift. Ordering take-out meals often will really add up; cooking at home is a much better and healthier idea. Travel nursing in California is a great place to take an assignment because of the plethora of markets with fresh produce available. Have fun experimenting with the local produce in the area and make it part of your travel nursing experience.

Get Your Rewards.
It’s time you took advantage of the many available money-saving rewards programs. Start a collection of frequent-buyer cards at your favorite local restaurants, coffee shops and dessert spots. Remember, every little bit helps. If you use credit cards, why not sign up for one with rewards that will complement your lifestyle? Airline credit cards are a particularly great idea for travel nurses since you’re moving every three months, plus vacations and weekend getaways. But there are also cards for everything from Nordstroms to Amazon.com that’ll send you discounts for future purchases. Just be sure to pay off your card every month to reap the full benefits.

Budgeting plans are different for everyone. By no means do you have to follow every tip thrown at you. Take baby steps at first to find the balance and decide what will work best for you. With all the extra money saved, you could treat yourself to a relaxing weekend getaway during your assignment. And your wallet will thank you too.

Picking a Specialty

I am about to begin my pre-reqs for the nursing program I want to get into, and I am thinking about my specialty. I always wanted to do neonatal nursing, but feared it would be very depressing and would be high stress because you are responsible for all the babies in the nursery. Any suggestions?
