Summer Travel Nursing

I’m wondering where the best travel assignments are for the summer? I’d love to go off the beaten path and try somewhere other than the West Coast, but still someplace warm and beautiful. Any suggestions? Thanks!

First Time ER Traveler

I am an ER nurse and work in Florida. My wife and I are wanting to do some traveling. I have a couple of questions:

1. We want to make money, that is the main reason we want to travel. Where are the best places to travel to to make the most money?
2. What were the working conditions?
3. Will most places you work let you pick up overtime?

Thanks in advance for any advice or information, this will be our first time traveling and Im pretty nervous to be leaving my home town.

Access Nurses Weekly - Top Travel Destinations For Meeting New People!

Friday, April 11th, 2008

Volume 14 Number 9 - April 11th

As the summer approaches, it has never been more of an ideal time to travel to cities where new lasting friendships can be made. After all, one of the great perks of travel nursing is developing new friendships everywhere you travel. Learn about the best cities for meeting new people. Plus, read tips about bonding with coworkers. You never know…you may meet a future travel buddy during your next travel assignment!

San Diego, California
Welcome to one of the most laid-back and fancy-free cities in the country. San Diego is a popular destination for nurses, which means the staff is full of travelers like you. Plus, with gorgeous weather throughout the year, you can enjoy plenty of group outdoor activities. Sign up to participate in San Diego Walking Tours. You’ll get to see the sights and meet some friends along the way.

New York City, New York
Not only can you bond with fellow coworkers in one of New York’s healthcare facilities, but it’s also the quintessential city for meeting people. The Learning Annex has all kinds of classes to join - from wine tasting to pottery. This way you can meet people who share your interests. Plus, volunteer opportunities will open you up to new personalities as well let you make a difference.

San Francisco, California
In this diverse city, you’re bound to find fun friendships. The San Francisco population ranges in age, background and interests, so no matter your place in life, the city has something to offer. Meet people in unexpected places - like at one of the city’s many outdoor markets and entertainment venues.

Tips for bonding with Co-Workers

Be friendly and open. Talk to your coworkers, especially during orientation when everyone else is new too. Tell them about yourself and ask them about their lives. And listen. People respond well to genuine interest and friendliness.

Step outside your comfort zone. Even if you’re not used to being a social butterfly, what have you got to lose? Be bold during your assignment and open up. Ask a coworker if he/she wants to grab coffee or a meal after a shift. Inquire to their weekend plans; maybe they’ll want to see a movie or go for a hike. You’ll never know if you don’t ask.

Incorporate humor into the workday. Humor is a great way to bring people together. As a travel nurse, you deal with very serious and intense situations on a daily basis with your coworkers. It’s important to find the time to have a laugh together.

Mingle outside of work. Every city has its own niche for meeting people during your off time. If you’re athletic, look into the recreation centers in your area; guarantee there’s a variety of sports teams looking for an extra eager player or two. You can also sign up for a special interest class with a coworker like painting, learn a new language or join a walking club together.

Best Part About Traveling

Hello fellow nurses! I’ve worked as a permanent nurse for a little while now and I’m alreayd getting burned out. I don’t have any close friends who are traveling nurses, but I’m curious about it. What are the best and worst aspects about traveling? If I’m thinking of traveling for the first time, when’s the best time to start?

I appreciate any input you can give me. Thanks in advance!
