More than half a million people have been displaced due to the many wildfires raging across Southern California. The unrelenting Santa Ana winds are the fuel for the fires that have burned thousands of homes and structures, leaving residents to seek shelter in evacuation centers across the county.

Though it seems this is a time for angst and sorrow, the response from the community is a reason for hope. Faced with one of the greatest natural disasters in California history, San Diego nurses have jumped to the rescue to offer aid to the massive crowds of displaced residents.

NurseTV.com covers the outpouring of love and contribution from nurses and volunteers at Qualcomm Stadium, one of many evacuation sites, in the latest segment, “In a Time of Need,” on the Web site. You can watch nurses become heroes to thousands of evacuees.

In addition to the food, supplies and clothing donations, nurses are providing necessary care and support to those relocated because of the fires. They’ve turned portions of the stadium into orderly care units, equipped with a diabetes station, blood pressure check and even an acupuncture area. You can listen to interviews with RNs who’ve answered the call for help during this county-wide catastrophe.

Thinking of Changing Specialties

I’ve been a traveling nurse for years and I’ve been all over. There is one place I’ve never gone and that’s New York City. I’m an OR nurse and I’ve been waiting for the perfect position to open up…there are some great positions available in New York after the first of the year. The only thing is, the specialties they need are everything but OR….PACU, ICU, ER, L&D. I don’t want to put off NYC much longer, but I’m nervous about trying another specialty. Should I branch out and try a new speciality or keep waiting for an OR position? Any advice is appreciated.
