Access Nurses Weekly - Safety in Numbers: Team Travel Nursing

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

Volume 10 Number 5 - June 28th

volume 10 - no 5Travel Nursing is an experience full of adventure and excitement. But life on the road can get lonely at times, especially if you’re traveling solo. A new trend in travel nursing has nipped this problem in the bud: Travel nurses are pairing up!

Jennifer J., 25, and Meredith M., 24, are two nurses who traveled together on their first assignment to Los Angeles, California, and it was the best decision they could have made.

“Having Meredith with me was a blessing,” said Jennifer, a CVICU nurse. “We shared so much with each other, learned so much from each other and remained sane because of each other.”

Jennifer, who originally planned to start travel nursing solo, teamed up with Meredith, an ICU/CCU nurse, after Meredith split with her boyfriend and needed a fresh start. Travel nursing offered both of them the opportunity to travel to a new and interesting city they’d always dreamed of visiting.

The transition to a new city can be difficult for nurses traveling alone, especially since, often times nurses will journey great distances for their travel assignments. In Meredith and Jennifer’s case, they moved across the country.

“Being away from home is difficult,” said Jennifer, who left behind her best friend/ boyfriend, dog, house and a comfortable job in Georgia. “Leaving this security was very difficult.”

Having the companionship of a fellow travel nurse can make exploring new cities an exciting, rather than scary, endeavor and makes it easier to cope with unfamiliar procedures and job requirements.

“It was a great stress reliever coming home, venting and bouncing things off each other,” said Meredith of dealing with the pressures of nursing. “We complained a lot to each other, but we laughed a lot too.”

Setting up a team travel nursing assignment does not have to be a difficult task. One thing to remember is that the needs of the hospital and the skill set of you and your friend dictate whether this will work. But with a flexible attitude and the right recruiter, you can make it happen.

Jennifer and Meredith worked with Sophia Buchanan at Access Nurses, a healthcare staffing agency, and were very pleased.

“[Sophia] was up front with us and she was able to give us numbers before signing with a hospital,” said Meredith. “We didn’t have to spend hours with her on the phone to figure out what our assignment would be like and how much money we would be making. Access Nurses was great to us.”

Sophia, who’s worked with traveling friends in the past, thinks teaming up is a great idea.

“I think from the nurse’s standpoint, it’s really scary to travel by themselves to a new city and new hospital, especially a first time traveler, so it’s nice to have a friend to go through the same experiences as them and have a support system,” said Sophia.

Another benefit of traveling in pairs is the financial savings. After all, relocating to a new job can be expensive. Moving with a friend allows you to cut costs by sharing an apartment and carpooling to work, an opportunity Jennifer and Meredith readily took advantage of. They not only worked at in the same unit at the same hospital, but they also shared an apartment.

“There are very few people that I could live with, and [Jennifer] is one of them,” said Meredith. “Our personalities complement each other very well. Qualities that I lack, she has, and vice versa.”

The best part about travel nursing is the flexibility. Do what works for you. Traveling nurses who select their assignments together can still have the security of a support system without having to work at the same hospital or even live in the same apartment. Sometimes just departing together and staying in touch during your assignment can be a big help.

Jennifer and Meredith felt very lucky to share their first travel assignment together, and it was certainly an experience they’ll never forget. They plan to work together again for their next two travel assignments in Fort Myers, Florida.

Access Nurses Weekly - Travel Nursing in Orange County and “Loving Every Minute” of it!

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

Volume 10 Number 4 - June 21st
volume 10 - no 4

(A gorgeous private cove in Orange County, California)

(RN Carla Jones is happy to be working as a travel nurse in sunny Orange County, California)

At the first mentioning of travel nursing, Carla Jones, a 48-year-old RN in Orange County, California, lights up! She loves her job. Period.

“I decided to go into nursing because it’s my calling. I love it.”

After working for three years in Hollywood, Florida, Carla decided to pack her bags and hit the road with her cat Vivian to work as a travel nurse. “I wanted to get experience and get paid to see the country.”

Travel nursing was the answer to both of her needs.

After three assignments on the east coast, Carla moved to the beautiful Orange County coastal town of Huntington Beach. Located in sunny Southern California, this fun beach community is less than a hour from the bustle and excitement of Los Angeles. Plus, with Carla’s friends living in Marina Del Rey and Rancho Cucamonga (both just 45 minutes away) Carla couldn’t have asked for a more perfectly-placed assignment.

She started her first assignment with Access Nurses at Orange Country Memorial Medical Center in May of last year and has continued to extend it for more than a year. “I love it out here; it’s just beautiful. I think [people in California] are the friendliest that I’ve seen across the United States. I’ve met some great friends out here.”

Though she’s worked with other staffing agencies in the past, Carla found a home with Access Nurses, and she couldn’t be happier. “I love everything about Access Nurses. The company is very well organized. You get quick responses on what you need. They are always good anytime I have a question. I am very happy.”

Carla has also made a great experience working in the oncology unit of the hospital. While it has its challenges, it’s where she believes she’s “supposed to be.”

Carla says it’s all about “helping [my patients] have the best day that they can.” She achieves this through sitting with her patients, talking and laughing. “Sometimes I think I’ve spent too much time in the room with my patients, but I don’t care; I’ll make up the time elsewhere. As long as I can spend time with them, that’s what gets me through it. It’s hard and you’re so emotionally and physically exhausted, but you know that it’s all for good.”

Carla plans to stay in Orange County for another few years. Proximity to the beach and the mountains and the spectacular weather make the area too desirable to leave. Working as a travel nurse has been a very fulfilling profession and she can’t imagine doing anything else.

“I love what I do. I know this is what I’m supposed to be doing and I love every minute of it!”

Access Nurses Weekly - A Fantastic Assignment: Travel Nursing at an Indian Navajo Reservation

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

Volume 10 Number 3 - June 14th

volume 10 - no 3
(Chinle, AZ: White House Ruins at the Canyon de Chelly National Monument.)

(Travel RN Naomi Heye with Ty Pennington on the set of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.)

Set against a backdrop of magnificent red rock and brilliant blue skies in the serene desert landscape of Chinle, Arizona, Canadian RN Naomi Heyes has had an experience of a lifetime!

Naomi is a 27-year-old nurse on her first travel assignment with Access Nurses, a healthcare services company that specializes in providing travel nurses to more than 1,600 hospitals throughout the United States. Her love of traveling has brought her to this Indian reservation in the heart of the Navajo Nation, home to such historic beauty like the Canyon de Chelly National Monument.

While attending college in British Columbia, Naomi knew she wanted to do travel nursing because of her love of traveling. She’s been to Guatemala, Europe, Cuba and all over the United States. She even worked in North Carolina after she graduated college.

Pediatrics has always appealed to Naomi, who works in the Obstetrics Care Unit. “I pretty much always knew [I’d work with kids]. Kids are what I love.” With her great love for children and passion for visiting new places, Naomi found the perfect match in travel nursing.

Working only three night shifts a week, Naomi has plenty of downtime to explore Arizona and even other surrounding places like Las Vegas and Utah. “I’ve done a ton of stuff. I love being able to go off randomly and sporadically…because I’m making more money [as a travel nurse].” She’s attended events like Tim McGraw/Faith Hill and Celine Dion concerts and was also lucky enough to volunteer on the show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. When she heard that the crew needed volunteers at the filming site in Pinon, a town about an hour away, she knew she had to go. She helped out the catering crew and then worked with Ty Pennington on his “secret project.”

“[Extreme Makeover: Home Edition] is my favorite T.V. show and being Canadian I thought I would never actually be near the show. This pretty much made my assignment fantastic!”

During her 13-week stay, Naomi has not only enjoyed the opportunity to travel, but she has had a welcoming and happy work experience with the staff at the Chinle healthcare facility. “The staff has been phenomenal; they’ve been so nice to me.”

Moving away from home was hard for Naomi, but with all of the fun adventures and activities, her assignment has gone by faster than expected. Her travel assignment is complete in just over a week. She plans to go home to Canada over the summer to be with a friend who’s giving birth to twins, and then will do some more travel nursing.

Naomi can’t wait to start traveling again with Access Nurses. This time, she’s thinking of a big city like New York City or Anchorage, Alaska.

New Nurse Jitters

Just qualified and I am three months into my first job. I love it mostly but about once a month everything goes perashaped. How are others finding it out there? And does anybody else find it extremely difficult not to worry about work when you come home? If you dont worry, how on earth did you learn not to do so?

A Simple Diagnosis

A man goes to the doctor and says to the doctor:

“It hurts when I press here” (pressing his side)
“And when I press here” (pressing the other side)
“And here” (his leg)
“And here, here and here” (his other leg, and both arms)

The doctor examined him all over and finally discovered what was wrong:

“You’ve got a broken finger!”

Best Specialty for Traveling Nurse

I’m an Emergency Room nurse in Michigan. In the next year or two, Im thinking about buying an RV and doing some travel nursing around the country. However, because of chronic staffing shortages in ER, Im thinking about switching to another specialty that might not be so stressful as I travel from hospital to hospital. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
