Hi, I am a RN working for Access since September 2004. I found a great assignment in Orange County at Orange Coast Memorial Med Center. I have made some good friends who introduced me to the surf at San Onofre. Here is a picture of me before I went surfing.

RN With No Experience

I graduated in 2005, then took and passed my nclex in 2006. I’m looking for a job mainly in New York City. I had one interview but was declined by the director of human resources saying that I need one year experience then I can call her again. I’m desperate to get a job. How can I get any experience if nobody wants to hire me?

PARROT

A man entered a pet shop, wanting to buy a parrot. The shop owner pointed out three identical parrots on a perch and said, “The parrot to the left costs 500 dollars.”

“Why does that parrot cost so much?” the man wondered.

The owner replied, “Well, it knows how to use a computer.”

The man asked about the next parrot on the perch.

“That one costs 1,000 dollars because it can do everything the other parrot can do, plus it knows how to use the UNIX operating system.”

Naturally, the startled customer asked about the third parrot.

“That one costs 2,000 dollars.”

“And what does that one do?” the man asked.

The owner replied, “To be honest, I’ve never seen him do a thing, but the other two call him boss!”

Access Nurses Weekly - Exploring the Sunshine State

Florida

This photo was taken at the Florida Aquarium in Tampa while on assignment in St Petersburg, Florida. When looking at this picture, it almost appears as if you’re looking at four turtles rather than two. I think this is a great representation of the different species you encounter while exploring the sunshine state. Enjoy!

Any pediatric nurses here?

I was just curious if we had any staff RNs who work in a pediatric hospital? I’ve been a RN for almost a year now and I’m trying to plan a move in the next year or so. My kids are heading off to college and I’m considering a move to a warmer climate and wondered about pediatric hospitals in certain states. I’ve also got travel nursing in the back of my mind. Any input would be appreciated! Thanks!

Faith

A couple of nuns who were nursing sisters had gone out to the country to minister to an outpatient. On the way back they were a few miles from home when they ran out of gas. They were standing beside their car on the shoulder when a truck approached.

Seeing ladies of the cloth in distress, the driver stopped to offer his help. The nuns explained they needed some gas. The driver of the truck said he would gladly drain some from his tank, but he didn’t have a bucket or can.
One of the nuns dug out a clean bedpan and asked the driver if he could use it. He said yes, and proceeded to drain a couple of quarts of gas into the pan. He waved goodbye to the nuns and left. The nuns were carefully pouring the precious fluid into their gas tank when the highway patrol came by.

The trooper stopped and watched for a minute, then he said: “Sisters, I don’t think it will work, but I sure do admire your faith!”

The Outhouse

Once there was a little boy who lived in the country. For bathroom facilities, they had to use an outhouse. The little boy hated it because it was hot in the summer and cold in the winter, and it stank all the time. The outhouse was sitting on the bank of a creek, and the boy determined that one day he would push that outhouse into the water.

One day after a spring rain, the creek was swollen so the little boy decided that today was the day to push the outhouse into the creek. So he got a large stick and pushed. Finally, the outhouse toppled into the creek and floated away.

That evening his dad sternly told him to sit down. Knowing he was in trouble, the little boy asked why. The dad replied, “Someone pushed the outhouse into the creek today. It was you, wasn’t it, son?” The boy nodded meekly. The father said, “Because of your actions, you will have to face the consequences, which will be severe.”

Then he thought a moment and said, “Dad, I learned in school that George Washington chopped down a cherry tree and didn’t get into trouble because he told the truth.” The dad replied, “Well, son, I’m glad you told the truth, but George Washington’s father wasn’t in that cherry tree!”

Access Nurses Weekly - Road Trip Through Florida

A spring time contract at Mammoth Lakes, CA had my wife and I facing record snowfall. Just outside town, there are geothermal areas like Hot Creek, a mountain creek that runs over a hot water vent. Decades ago, some locals built a rock tub and diverted a hot spring into it.

The Next Adventure

I’ll be completing my first assignment in January in San Diego. So far I really loved the weather and outdoor activities. I’d like to travel somewhere else, but am not sure what place would match up with my interests.

I’m looking for a place that has mild winters and <90 degree weather in the summer. I want to be around nature of some sort - big trees, mountains, water, beach, etc…Definitely a place where I can go hiking or exploring. If anyone has advice, please let me know.

Tooth Fairy

While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I used to take my four-year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds.

She was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers and wheelchairs.

One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass. As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered, “The tooth fairy will never believe this!”
