Volume 6 Number 4 September 31, 2006

volume 6 - no 4“People of the Blue-Green water”
Sonja D, RN
Grand Canyon, Arizona

During my exended assignment in Phoenix, AZ, I was able to visit the Grand Canyon twice!
The first time hiking the rim of the canyon it snowed, the second trip 3 months later I hiked
10 miles down into the canyon to the Indian village of Havasupai
(it means “people of the blue-green water”). I am pictured here sitting at Moony Falls
and again at Havasu Falls at the bottom of the canyon. The water there is as clear
as the Caribbean but as cold as glacier water all year round.

Adventure is where you find it!

Where is this place?

A man and his wife were driving their Recreational Vehicle across
the country and were nearing a town spelled Kissimee.
They noted the strange spelling and tried to figure how to pronounce it
- KISS-a-me; kis-A-me; kis-a-ME.
They grew more perplexed as they drove into the town.

Since they were hungry, they pulled into a place to get something to eat.
At the counter, the man said to the waitress:

“My wife and I can’t seem to be able to figure out how to pronounce this place.
Will you tell me where we are and say it very slowly so that I can understand.”

The waitress looked at him and said: “Buuurrrgerrr Kiiiinnnng.”

“Just too much to explore!”
Cathy T, RN
Grand Canyon, Arizona

I am working Labor & Delivery in Chinle, AZ on the Navajo Reservation. My original assignment was for 13 weeks but I extended because there is just too much to
explore in the area! My favorite photogenic place so far is Monument Valley, scene of many western movies and car commercials! John Wayne made his film
‘Stagecoach’ here as well as other John Ford movies.

We took a tour with Benny, a Navajo guide, and he took us onto the the back roads into majestic rock formations, like the ‘Big Hogan’ which is called that because it
resembles the shape of a traditional Navajo dwelling complete with a smoke hole on the top. We also met Susie Yazzie, a 92-year-old native woman who was in the
movies here with ‘The Duke’. She still weaves traditional rugs and demonstrated the technique for us.

The other photos are from Canyon de Chelly (just 5 minutes from where I’m staying), Mesa Verde Colorado and Hubbell Trading post in Ganado, AZ (30 minutes from
Chinle).

Stay over one night

A hindu priest, rabbi and a lawyer were driving down the road, when the car breaks down. Fortunately finding a farmhouse nearby, the farmer informed them that he
had only one spare room, and that it had only two twin beds.

They were welcome to it, but one of them had to sleep in the barn. After much discussion, the hindu volunteered to go to the barn. A few moments later, a knock on
the bedroom door, and the hindu explained that there was a cow in the barn, and cows are sacred and he could not possibly sleep in the barn with a cow.

Annoyed, the rabbi volunteered. A few moments later, a knock on the door. The rabbi explained that there was a pig in the barn and that he, being very orthodox,
could not possibly spend the evening in the barn with the origin of pork.

Finally the lawyer said that he would go to the barn. A few moments later there was a knock on the door. It was the cow and the pig!

“I was in a customer’s home one afternoon and while I was talking to the
customer, their 4 year old little girl whose name was Michelle, tugged on
my pants leg and excitedly exclaimed, “I got a new bicycle, do you want
to see it?”

I said, “Sure Michelle.” So off to the backyard we went. Upon getting into
the backyard, I saw a brand new girl’s bicycle. “Boy, Michelle!! That’s a
beautiful bicycle.” I complimented. “Can you ride it?”

“Yeah, I can ride it,” she said, then with a sad face she pouted,
“but it’s broke.”

I looked at the new bicycle and couldn’t see anything wrong with it,
so I asked her, “What’s wrong with it?”

“I don’t know,” she shrugged, “but every time I ride it, it falls down!”
